Day trails


A day on the saddle exploring coastal trails along Lake Mälaren, the royal island of Lovö or Stockholm city 
is a day well spent! 

Rent a bike from us at Nordic Trails and explore the local area over the day. All the suggestions below are accessible direct from our bike rental in Smedslätten, Bromma. We can also provide bike transport if you have somewhere further afield in mind.

Lovö loop

Six picturesque kilometres from Smedslätten is royal Lovö island, home to impressive Drottningholm Palace. Cycle a 13 km loop around the island on gravel tracks and country lanes, passing Hogsta farming village, charming Lovö Magasin and beautiful countryside.

Opportunities to hike on Rävstensstigen (3.5 km) & Kärsön (6 km)

Cycling distance, loop: 29 km

Kungsholmen loop

One bridge away and you're in the heart of town, Kungsholmen. But stick to the coastal cycle routes and you'll hardly notice you're in the capital of Scandinavia! This 10 km loop around Kungsholmen takes you past Smedsuddsbadet beach, the mighty city hall, views to the old town, Klara strand canal and trendy Hornsberg Strand.

Stockholm loop

Why not set yourself the challenge of cycling Stockholm's waterfront!
Start with the south coast of Södermalm, and then cross over to Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen, Nybroviken, Strandvägen, and over the bridge to Djurgården. Cycle round Djurgården and then head the same way back until you reach Kungsholmen. Follow the north coast on Kungsholmen all the way back to Traneberg bridge and over to Bromma!

Mälaren's coast

Direct from Smedslätten you can follow Mälaren's picturesque coast on mostly dirt track as far as Hässelby Strand, passing Grimsta nature reserve, beaches, Kanaan cafe, and beautiful viewpoints over lake Mälaren.

Opportunities to hike in Grimsta nature reserve and on Kärsön (6 km)
Detour to Drottningholm Palace (2 km) and add Lovö loop (15 km) if you want to cover more kilometers.

Cycling distance, return: 25 km




Djurgården & Ecopark loop

Follow the water all the way from Smedslätten to Djurgården along Norr Mälarstrand, Nybrokajen and Strandvägen. You then cycle around picturesque Djurgården, passing Rosendals Trädgård garden cafe, and Rosendal Palace plus extravagant houses of the privileged few who live on this island paradise!

Continue up to Brunnsviken & Hagaparken (14.5 km), and even on to Ulriksdal Palace (8.5 km) if you want to explore the whole Ecopark.

Around Mälaren

If you want your day trip to feel like a true cycling adventure then consider cycling a 50 km loop around lake Mälaren. The loop takes you from Bromma over the Essinge islands to Stockholm's southern suburbs including Vinterviken, Mälarhöjden and Sätra nature reserve. Follow the coast all the way on small trails, passing beach after beach, cosy cafes and beautiful views, until you reach Slagsta where you take the ferry over to Ekerö. 

From Ekerö you continue your tour through Lovö's lush countryside passing the beautiful Drottningholm Palace. Your adventure continues through Bromma's 1920s idyllic garden city.

Södermalm loop

Two bridges from Smedslätten and you find yourself on Stocksholm's Södermalm island. Cycle 10 km around the island hugging the coast, passing immaculate Erikdalslund allotments, Tantolunden beach and wonderful viewpoints of the old town. And enjoy even more views of our beautiful city from Västerbron bridge as you make your way back to Smedslätten.

Detour to picturesque Monteliusvägen & Skinnarviksberget for iconic Stockholm viewpoints.

Bromma loop

A charming bike ride along Lake Mälaren's beautiful coastline and among Gamla Bromma's idyllic garden city from the 1920s. Pass viewpoints, beaches, the Judarns Nature Reserve, Åkeshov manor, grand villas, cafes and authentic Italian ice cream!
